Online Store Platforms: SALYSS, Shopify or WordPress?

Three platforms every new online seller asks about. A fair comparison on the points that matter to a store in Egypt and the Gulf: payments, shipping, fake orders, WhatsApp, organisation, speed and real profit.

The first question anyone opening an online store faces is simple: which platform should I build on? The answer usually narrows to three names. Shopify, the best-known global platform. WordPress with the WooCommerce plugin, the most widely installed option. And SALYSS Commerce, built for Egypt and the Gulf. Each is good in its own context, so the real question is not “which is best?” but “which fits the way you sell?”. Here we compare them fairly, on the points that actually matter to a merchant selling in Egypt or the Gulf.

Why the comparison is different in Egypt and the Gulf

Most published comparisons are written for a seller in Europe or the US who is paid by card at checkout. Egypt, and a good part of the Gulf, work differently. Cash on delivery is common, payment gateways and couriers differ from one country to the next, and an order is not a sale until the customer answers, confirms and receives it. That raises questions global reviews never ask. How many fake orders arrive? Who calls the customer to confirm? How many parcels come back? And how much did you really earn after returns, shipping and ads? We covered these challenges in detail in Cash on delivery in Egypt.

The comparison at a glance

The table below covers twelve practical points. Green means the feature is part of the platform itself. Amber means it is possible, but through a separate app or plugin, usually with its own subscription.

Shopify: strong globally, with limits in our region

Shopify is mature and easy to start with, and its huge app market covers almost any need. It is an excellent choice for selling to customers abroad by card. Still, a merchant in Egypt or the Gulf should know a few things before deciding:

  • Shopify Payments is available in the UAE among the Gulf countries, but not to stores based in Egypt or Saudi Arabia, according to the official list of supported countries. There you need a third-party gateway, and Shopify adds a 2% transaction fee on it on the Basic plan, as shown on its pricing page.
  • The monthly subscription is in US dollars, so it moves with the exchange rate.
  • Cash on delivery is available as a manual method with no transaction fees. But order confirmation, fake-order protection and local courier integration usually come from third-party apps, each with its own subscription and its own dashboard.

WordPress: full flexibility, full responsibility

The WooCommerce plugin is free and open source. It gives you complete control over your store and your data, and you can build almost anything with it. That is a real advantage if you have a technical team or a developer you trust. In return, hosting, backups, updates and security are all yours to manage, and every extra feature means another plugin that may clash with others or slow the site down. Over time, “free” turns into a stack of subscriptions and maintenance hours.

SALYSS Commerce: a complete system for Egypt and the Gulf

The idea behind SALYSS is that a store is not just product pages; it is a whole operation behind them. So the system ships with the tools a merchant in Egypt and the Gulf needs, ready and connected in one dashboard, instead of stitched together from separate apps with separate dashboards:

  • Orders with clear statuses from “new” to “delivered”, one-tap call and WhatsApp buttons, and each customer’s history before you confirm.
  • Fake-order protection: only valid mobile numbers, limits on orders from the same number and on repeated attempts, and risk scoring that sends suspicious orders to review.
  • Integration with SALYSS App for marketing: every customer who replies to your ad on any platform is followed until they order, and the order is confirmed on WhatsApp automatically.
  • Integration with the payment gateways and couriers that fit your market, local and international, in Egypt, the Gulf and beyond.
  • Inventory that warns you before a product runs out, and light pages tuned for fast mobile browsing.
  • A store app you can publish on Google Play, and a store-management app with new-order notifications.

Most importantly, the reports calculate real profit, not just sales: income after returns, minus the cost of goods, shipping, ads and expenses. Read more in A complete e-commerce management system.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify support cash on delivery in Egypt?

Yes. Cash on delivery can be added as a manual payment method with no Shopify transaction fees. Confirming orders and blocking fake ones, however, usually needs extra apps.

Is WordPress really free?

The WooCommerce plugin is free, but a store still needs hosting, a domain and an SSL certificate, often paid plugins for payments and shipping, plus ongoing updates and maintenance that fall on you.

When is Shopify the better choice?

When you need a large global app market, sell from a country where Shopify Payments is available, and do not rely mainly on cash on delivery.

Does SALYSS work for stores in the Gulf?

Yes. We work in Egypt and the Gulf, and connect your store to the payment gateway and couriers that fit your market, local and international, with an Arabic storefront and dashboard.

How much does a store on SALYSS cost?

Pricing depends on the size of the store, the market and the tools you need. Book a free consultation and we will suggest what fits your business.
