Common online store launch mistakes

Most stores do not stumble because of the product, but because of details discovered after the first orders. Six mistakes we see often, and five steps for a calmer launch.

Launching an online store is exciting: products ready, site live, first ad about to go out. Then the first orders arrive, and the surprises start: a customer asks about a size that is not listed, a shipment costs more than expected, an order gets lost between the site and the courier’s dashboard. Most online store mistakes have nothing to do with the product; they are details that could have been caught before launch.

We collected these mistakes from our work with online stores, including Grandy Store, built on SALYSS Commerce.

Six mistakes we see often

Six common mistakes before launching an online store
Six mistakes that are easy to avoid if reviewed before the first ad.

1. Photos that do not show the product as it is

To the customer, the photo is the product. Dark photos or a single angle make them hesitate, and over-edited photos create returns because the product arrives different from what they expected.

2. Thin descriptions

Size, material, dimensions, how to use it. Every question a customer sends before buying is information that should have been in the description. And customers who do not find the answer usually do not ask; they leave.

3. Uncosted shipping

Shipping costs vary by governorate, and returns are paid both ways. A store that does not calculate this in advance discovers that some orders lose money instead of making it.

4. No test order

Many stores launch without trying the full order journey. Then the first customer finds that confirmation messages do not arrive, or that the address is not passed fully to the courier.

5. A vague return policy

Customers who do not know what happens if the product does not suit them hesitate to buy. A clear, simply written policy builds trust and reduces disputes after the sale.

6. Launch with no follow-up

Orders arrive and nobody responds quickly; messages wait a whole day. In the first days especially, response speed is what builds a store’s reputation.

Five steps before the first ad

Five steps for a calm online store launch
A calm launch starts with data and ends with advertising, not the other way round.
  1. Product data: real photos, descriptions that answer expected questions, final prices.
  2. Test order: order from your own store like a customer and follow it until it reaches you.
  3. Shipping and collection: try it with the courier for real, make sure the shipment status returns to the order and collected amounts reconcile.
  4. Returns: write the policy and walk through returning one order.
  5. Launch: then advertise with confidence, knowing every order will reach its end.

What changes when the store is a system, not just a storefront?

Many of these mistakes happen because the store is a display window while operations run elsewhere. When orders, stock and shipping live in one system, the chance of error drops on its own: the address is not typed twice, an out-of-stock product does not show as available, and shipment status flows back to the order. That is what SALYSS Commerce (page in Arabic) was designed for, with shipping through Bosta and J&T Egypt from inside the system.

The first week after launch

In the first week, watch three things daily: orders not yet confirmed, shipments running late, and messages nobody has answered. Those three numbers tell you where the store is stumbling before customer reviews do. Collect every question customers send in one list, then add the answers to product descriptions and the FAQ page; every question answered on the site is a message you will not receive again, and a customer who will not hesitate.

One last lesson

The best store is not the one that launches with the most products, but the one that launches with as many as it can serve well. Start small, master the order journey, then expand. If you would like us to review your store before launch, book a free consultation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important step before launch?

A full test order: from ordering on the site to delivery and actual collection with the courier. It reveals most problems before customers see them.

Should we advertise from day one?

Better to start ads once you are sure orders are received and shipped smoothly. Advertising before that multiplies problems rather than sales.

How do I account for shipping in prices?

Know the courier’s prices by governorate and the likely cost of returns, then decide whether to include it in the price or show it clearly and separately at checkout.
